Mattawan Middle School (B) Science Olympiad
Our Middle School Team generally places well in the Regional Tournament year after year. And, as of this year, will go to State with a minimum of 6th place. The following gives more information about our B Team.
Meetings
Meetings are mostly mandatory at the Middle School level, mainly out of a distrust in Middle Schoolers to finish work outside of meetings. They are generally on Tuesdays and Thursdays, although that is subject to change and are an hour long after school.
Alternate/Primary Teams
The Middle School divides their Science "O" team into two teams; much like a track and field team might have a Varsity and JV team, Science "O" is split into a Primary and Alternate team, both with varying perks:
- The Primary team is chosen with a test (desribed in the traditions section) and is composed of 15 members that work hard at their events to win competitions.
- The Alternate team is also chosen in the same method and has a maximum of 15 members, which compete at the same competitions, with the exception of the State Competition.
Traditions
- One tradition that the Middle School uses to place their students onto the teams is done by each potential member taking a test of science basics that helps the coaches to understand their scientific literacy.
- Each year, the team takes part in designing a team T-shirt (shown above) that gives the team its own identity and uniform for competitions.
